Summary of Work Completed during the 2012 Summer Season: Upgraded eight camp sites on Baskahegan Lake including Long Island, Ant Island, Ship Island & Round Island (3), Norway and Abraquidassat Points. Work done includes completion of rebuilding rock fire pits, grading ground surfaces for picnic tables and tenting, installing heavy duty cedar picnic tables, fiberglass outboxes and signage. Kenneth Winiarski (age 16) did biweekly maintenance of lake camp sites, weekly cleaning of the landing in Brookton including cutting the grass, picking up trash and maintaining a trash can. A survey box was installed at the Brookton Landing and user’s feedback collected. High quality signs with a map of the lake showing campsite locations and trip distances by canoe or kayak were placed at the Brookton Landing and launch location on The White Farm Road in Kossuth. The project was made possible by grants awarded to Maine Wilderness Trips with Canoe the Wild Guide service  from the Stetson Mountain fund and a nature based tourism fund by the Washington County Unorganized Territory Tax increment fund (TIF) program that was established through a cooperative agreement between First Wind and the Washington County government. Sunrise County Economic Council is the administrator of the funds. Baskahegan Lake is a great spot to fish for white perch and small mouth bass. Camping is available on several island sites. Make this a multi day canoeing or kayak trip beginning in Kossuth near Topsfield off route 6 to Brookton-Danforth-Bancroft, 10 to 33 miles, 1 to 3 days and is best run in high water during the spring, early summer and in the fall. Our goal for 2013 (with landowner permission) is to build four sites along the stream sections of the 33 miles from Kossuth to Bancroft which will make longer paddle trips by canoe or kayak more desirable.

Kenneth Winiarski and I have been busy working with the support of grants awarded to Canoe the Wild Guide service and Kenneth Winiarski from the Stetson Mountain fund grant and a nature based tourism grant provided by the Washington County  Unorganized Territory Tax increment fund (TIF) program that was established through a cooperative agreement between First Wind  and the Washington County government. The sites have been cleaned, heavy duty cedar tables installed, fire pits rebuilt and fiberglass outboxes installed. This is a great spot to fish for white perch and small mouth bass.
